Australian professional footballer for Adelaide United publicly came out as gay on a video posted on the team’s social media on Wednesday.
During a video shot from his home, the 21-year-old came out, becoming the only openly active international top-flight male to do so. The post was captioned as ‘Josh’s truth.’
“I’m a footballer, and I’m gay. Growing up, I always felt the need to hide myself, you know, because I was ashamed. Ashamed. I’ll never be able to do what I love and be gay,” Cavallo shyly announced.
Josh made the statement ahead of the new A-League season, which starts in November.
“I thought that people would think of me differently when they found out. They would start treating me differently. That would start saying bad things about me or making fun out of me. That’s not the case. If anything, you earn more respect from people,” he commented.
Cavallo’s statement has attracted praise from some of the most widely respected football players and clubs, including Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and FC Bayern Munchen.
