Australia: Sydney kicks off 2022 with firework bang

Fireworks led Australia’s entrance into 2022 with a spectacular display on the Sydney harbour watched around the world.

The firework display, which was preceded by a blue hue across the harbour at 22:00 (local time; 11:00 GMT) to pay homage to frontline workers during the pandemic, consisted of six tonnes of fireworks and 80,000 pyrotechnic effects.

There were far fewer spectators than usual due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state of New South Wales.

The display is one of the biggest and most sophisticated in the world according to Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, utilising 2,000 fireworks.
