Austria: Emergency operations underway after severe floods hit Tyrol town Kufstein

Firemen were seen dealing with the aftermath of a night of flooding and heavy rainfall in the Austrian city of Kufstein, in the state of Tyrol, on Sunday.

A civil defence alarm was triggered by the authorities on Saturday, as an appeal was made for residents to stay indoors, keep away from river banks and avoid underground areas and venues, such as garages and cellars.

The authorities have since published an update on the situation, noting that “the situation seems to be easing” amid an expected fall in precipitation during the afternoon.

According to the authorities, 536 fire brigade operations took place in Tyrol since yesterday, with half of these having taken place in Kufstein.

Western Europe has seen extreme weather this past week, with heavy rainfall causing flooding in countries including Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.

Over 180 people have been killed across Europe as a result of the floods, with thousands left displaced.
