Germany: Flooding leaves trail of destruction in its wake in Erftstadt

Several swept away cars could be seen in Erftstadt, south of Cologne, on Friday, after residential areas and parts of the A1 motorway were flooded in the small town.

Dozens of rescue and emergency workers rushed to the site, some carrying boats. Multiple houses have collapsed due to flooding in Erftstadt, with local authorities fearing that several residents have died although the extensive flooding has made exact confirmation difficult.

At least 103 people were killed, and more than 1,000 have gone missing after the flash floods hit parts of western Germany, while tens of thousands have been left without electricity. Flooding has also affected Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
