Hundred of rescue workers including soldiers were deployed in a flooded area of Blessem, south of Cologne on Friday.

Several people were killed when houses collapsed in Erftstadt-Blessem amid floods which also forced the closure of the A1 motorway in the region.

At least 100 people were killed and more than 1,000 went missing after the floods hit parts of western Germany.

SOT, Timo Muller, Local resident (German): “It is very tense, right behind the mountain and the road, and in the area, everything there is undone, the houses have collapsed. Yeah, I’m close to tears I have to say because many friends and neighbours of mine have all been evacuated and its already a difficult situation, quite honestly. We’re happy that we can go back into the house quickly, at least to get our stuff, above all our animals, we’re now leaving again and hoping to the best that everything here doesn’t collapse further.”

SOT, Timo Muller, Local resident (German): “I believe the area has been completely evacuated. Yesterday they rescued people from here with a helicopter, from roofs and etc. We’re always awake at 2:00, 2:30 at night, they unfortunately smashed down the door but the rescue workers can’t do help it, they wanted to wake us up, yeah in order to wake us up, to take us with, and we have, thank god, a couple of friends or a nice sister, where we’re staying now, by my scrapper in end effect.”
