Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced that his government will ease COVID restrictions starting from 5 February, during a press conference at the Federal Chancellery building in Vienna on Saturday.

“From 5 February, the closing hours in the hotel and retail trade will be extended to 24 hours, the maximum number of people at events will also be increased from 25 to 50 people, from 12 February, the 2G obligation in the retail trade will be phased out, the FFP2 mask obligation will be maintained from 19 February, a further step will then only apply in the 3G hotel trade as well as in tourism,” Nehammer said.

The easing of measures comes as the number of people infected with the virus remains high - almost 35,000 new COVID infections on Saturday, according to chief medical officer Katerina Reich. “The peak of the Omicron wave is expected in the first week of February,” she told the press.
