Unvaccinated people will be able to leave their homes only if crucially necessary from Monday, the Austrian authorities declared on Sunday.

Speaking during a press conference, Austria’s Chancellor Alexander Schellenberg stated “We have decided today, that starting from tomorrow, Monday at 00:00, a lockdown for unvaccinated people will apply in Austria. This means curfew restrictions for all people over the age of 12. Private living spaces may only be left in exceptional cases. 2G will apply in retail that stretches beyond the basic needs. Visits of clothing stores, sports shops, furniture stores and others will no longer be permitted.“

“Fortunately, the incidence for vaccinated people is declining, however continues to rise exponentially among the unvaccinated in the age group of 18 to 59 years old up to 1,700 cases,“ he concluded.

The country’s interior minister, Karl Nehammer, clarified that Austria’s vaccination rate is too low, at around 65 percent, one of the lowest in Western Europe, and urged people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The new measures, which will not apply to children under 12 or those who have recently recovered from COVID, will last for 10 days with a possibility of extension, Health Minister Wolfgang Muckstein said.

SOT, Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Chancellor (German): “Our task as the federal government is to protect the people of Austria, and we are fulfilling this responsibility. Fortunately, the incidence for vaccinated people is declining and continues to rise exponentially among the unvaccinated in the age group of 18 to 59 years old up to 1,700 cases.”

SOT, Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Chancellor (German): “Therefore, we have decided today, that starting from tomorrow, Monday at 00:00, a lockdown for unvaccinated people will apply in Austria. This means curfew restrictions for all people over the age of 12. Private living spaces may only be left in exceptional cases. 2G will apply in retail that stretches beyond the basic needs. Visits of clothing stores, sports shops, furniture stores and others will no longer be permitted. As the federal government together with the provincial governors, we are speeding up the process of a jointly developed step-by-step plan, bringing forward the fifth step. I have to say quite frankly that we are not taking this step lightly, but unfortunately, it is necessary - we announced this dialogue in the past few days and it is being implemented today.”

SOT, Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Chancellor (German): “With this vaccination rate we will not succeed in getting out of the pandemic with this vaccination rate we will remain stuck in the vicious circle and between lockdown wave lockdown wave back and forth. That cannot be our goal we cannot want that, therefore please help us again to break this fourth wave always with full force and let us break this vicious circle to get out of this. The only way is and remains vaccination, thank you very much.”

SOT, Wolfgang Muckstein, Austrian Health Minister (German): “From Monday, November 15, the following exit restrictions apply all day for people who are neither vaccinated nor enjoy children up to the age of 12 are exempt from the restrictions. Curfew restrictions for unvaccinated people also apply, for example, to establishments of non-essential trade and services, to establishments of the catering trade and to sports facilities too.”

SOT, Karl Nehammer, Austrian Interior Minister (German): “Lockdown for the unvaccinated is not an end in itself, it is not a recommendation, but it is clearly an order and then has an effect if it is controlled accordingly.”

SOT, Karl Nehammer, Austrian Interior Minister (German): “From tomorrow, every citizen, every person living in Austria must be aware that he or she can be controlled by the police. As we will also control the 2G in all our inspection measures carry out by the police, and we will also control the reason for entering the public space.”
