Austria: Hundreds protesters call for Kurz to resign amid corruption accusations

Hundreds of Austrians protested in front of the headquarters of the leading OVP party on Thursday evening. The protesters called for the resignation of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who is under accusation of corruption.

Prosecutors raided Kurz’ offices on Wednesday morning, along with his closest advisers and the party headquarters in Vienna. The Chancellor denies all allegations.

SOT, Paul Stich, Socialist Youth Austria Association chairperson (German): “We are here today, in front of the headquarters of the OVP, also known as the party of chancellor Sebastian Kurz. We try to make clear that a chancellor whos in the innermost circles are in a big corruption case is not under any circumstances able to continue office. The state treasury is not a self-service shop and that is also the case for Kurz and his clique.”

SOT, Claudia O’Brien, SPO Youth Generation federal chairperson (German): ““The alllegations on the table are that Kurz and this henchmen obviously bought media reporting. That they smoothed out surveys to improve their image by using the finance ministry, also known as tax money, to fund that. That what is shown now is, that the people that were manipulated were the ones who involantarly funded it.”

SOT, Rihab Toumi, Socialist Youth Vienna chairperson (German): “Our motto for today is very clear, Kurz must go. It is enough with the corruption, it is enough with the inhumane politics, it is enough with the racist politics. There is only one end to today, and that is be gone with Kurz’s system.”

SOT, Thomas Schmidinger, Protester (German): “Kurz can not, in my opinion, keep office. Austria needs a new beginning, a coalition for the defence of democracy and the rule of law. And without the blue-turquoise party.”
