Austria: Iconic Mozartkugel manufacturer Salzburg Schokolade goes bankrupt

Salzburg locals on Wednesday shared their thoughts on the insolvency declared by confectionary manufacturer Salzburg Schokolade, famous for producing Mozartkugel (Mozart balls).
On Monday, the iconic Austrian manufacturers filed for bankruptcy, with estimated liabilities of €27,29 million ($30.9 million), at the Salzburg Regional Court.
According to local media, the company producing small chocolate bonbons with marzipan beloved by tourists experienced a significant decrease in sales due to fewer travellers in the region. The company cites losses dating back to 2016 and the decline in sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“Well, that’s a shame, not because of the good taste, because it wasn’t that good. But it was certainly the most popular with tourists,” stated Salzburg local Max Petrik.
It is estimated that 140 employees and 600 creditors are affected by the bankruptcy.
“Incredible, I can’t believe it. I thought it was usually always something good, a best seller in Salzburg,” stated Adrian.
The company was founded in 1897 in the city of Salzburg under the name Rajsigl-Suesswarenfabrik and moved to Groedig in 1956.

SOT, Max Petrik, Salzburg local (German): “Well, that’s a shame, not because of the good taste, because it wasn’t that good. But it was certainly the most popular with tourists and since then there have been no more international tourists. An Austrian hardly eats Mozartkugel from the enormously expensive, good pastry chef Mozartkugeln. But nobody eats mass-produced Mirabell products here.”

SOT, Max Petrik, Salzburg local (German): “Yes, there are three original Salzburger Mozartkugels, i.e., the original one, that is the Reber Echte Mozartkugel, then comes the Echte Salzburger Mozartkugel and then behind the corner at the Prince’s, the Original Salzburger Mozartkugel. They argued for years but agreed on this text. And the Mozartkugeln from Mirabell, they are still available and there is a big shop in Getreidegasse where you can find them.”

SOT Adrian, Salzburg local (German): “Incredible, I can’t believe it. I thought it was usually always something good, a bestseller in Salzburg. No, and now all of a sudden, when you hear it like that, you are speechless. But the government has gone this far, I don’t know what they’re up to. But I just find it, I have no idea, but not right towards people. Because we are only lied to anyway, from all sides.”

SOT Adrian, Salzburg local (German): “Yes, the economy takes it, I think it’s a (inaudible) that there has now been a fourth lockdown at all. If the government had done it right on the first lockdown, like the Chinese did. They would have closed everything for 3 months and then the whole thing was over. Here in Europe, they relaxed the lockdown. What good does it do when you have an exit time and everything. That doesn’t do anything. Nobody got anything out of it.”
