Authorities are assessing the situation on Vulcano island north of Sicily on Wednesday following an evacuation order for 250 residents which was given earlier this week due to concerns over seismic activity.

“What is happening is that these concentrations (of gas) have led to an initial order (of evacuation) limited to an area of the island which has been restricted due to the presence of CO2 that is too high and incompatible with human life as it is too dangerous,” explained island administrator Massimo D’Auria.

“The mayor has put in place an office which is the advanced center of civil protection which is also supported by the Red Cross to give the right information to citizens and collect their reports,” said Angelo Messina, a civil protection coordinator on the island.

Vulcano is now closed to tourists while a red zone has been established on the island where partial evacuations have taken place.
