When it comes to companies controlling your lives, it’s not Google, Facebook, or Amazon you need to worry about right now, but your local utility companies. Folks in Colorado learned that this week after Xcel Energy locked them out of their thermostats, often leaving them as high as 88 degrees amid a heatwave. Customers were outraged on social media, decrying the dystopian future they found themselves in. But it ends up they had chosen to be part of a savings program that let the energy company do this, As Xcel Energy claims, these programs allow them to better predict energy usage and have a more stable grid. Thermostat-hijacking savings programs are common in energy companies, so if you’re getting some kind of discount, go double-check that your power company hasn’t taken away your right to argue with your roommates or partner about the temperature inside your home.
