Beijing to take 'countermeasures' after US plans diplomatic boycott of Winter Olympics - FM spox

China on Tuesday condemned a decision by Washington to stage a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics.

“The US approach seriously violates the principle of political neutrality of sports established in the Olympic Charter, runs counter to the Olympic motto of “more unity,” and stands against the vast number of athletes and sports enthusiasts all over the world. China expresses strong dissatisfaction with the US side and firmly opposes it. It has made solemn representations to the US side and will take resolute countermeasures,” said the spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday announced plans for a diplomatic boycott saying it was in response to “egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang” a claim Zhao refuted as “lies and rumours”.

It is hoped that all parties will practice the more United Olympic spirit and stop politicising sports.”
