With just 100 days left until the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics, the organisers released footage of the event campus and Olympic village in Zhangjiakou on Tuesday.
China is promising a ‘imple and safe’ 2022 Winter Olympic Games, despite the fact preparations have been marred by multiple local COVID-19 flare-ups.
Beijing will become the first city in the world to have held both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Calls from human rights groups for a boycott of the games have dominated coverage, China’s treatment of Tibet, Uyghur Muslims and Hong Kong are among the reason for the calls.
No participating country has yet said that it will boycott the competition, though multiple European, US and UK lawmakers have all voted for their diplomats to boycott the event.
The Beijing Winter Olympics will run from February 4th until Februrary 20th. All participants are expected to be subjected to daily COVID-19 tests, while similarly to last summer’s Tokyo Games, no international spectators will be permitted.
China led the gold medals chart at the 2008 Summer Olympics and came in a strong second at Tokyo last summer. However, their performance in the winter games have been historically weaker. China won just one gold medal in the last Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, finishing 14th overall.
