Belarus: Allied Resolve 2022 drills begin with Russia

Joint Belarus-Russia Allied Resolve 2022 military drills started at the combined training grounds of Belarus on Thursday.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said the drills, which last until Feb 20, are being carried out “to work out the tasks of suppressing and repelling external aggression while conducting a defensive operation, countering terrorism, and protecting the interests of the Union State.”

Military units from Russia’s Eastern Military District and the armed forces of Belarus are involved in the exercise, the ministry said.

The exercise comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO members. Moscow has denied accusations that it is gathering forces at the border with the intention of invading Ukraine.
