Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced a “cleanup” of what he branded as “harmful” NGOs in the country, during a meeting with the leadership of the Council of Ministers in Minsk on Thursday.
Lukashenko said: “The government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs started chasing ‘democracy’ and ended up having nearly two thousand NGOs, bandits and foreign agents in a small country like ours,” the president said, adding, “Did you get this democracy? We have recently realised: this is detrimental to the state. A cleanup is underway.”
Lukashenko also claimed that Belarusian people working in such organisations “were brainwashed using someone else’s money.”
“Of course, we should not be retrogressive and stick to the things that became antiquated. Yet, we must run in the right direction, always think about the consequences of our actions,” he added.
On July 13, the Belarusian president had already stated that authorities would pay close attention to NGOs, NPOs and Western media present in the country.
Last week, numerous searches were carried out throughout Belarus on human rights defenders, activists, journalists of non-state media, representatives of non-governmental organisations and opposition parties.
The Investigative Committee of Belarus said that searches were conducted to establish how the mass protests of last August were financed.

SOT, Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus: “We chased after the best samples in the world that were thrown at us, and we got what we got. The same way the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs started chasing ‘democracy’ and ended up having nearly two thousand NGOs, bandits and foreign agents in a small country like ours - [Foreign Minister Vladimir] Makei should not take it personally again, this had been happening before him, he inherited it, we need to sort it out now. So what, did you get this democracy? We have recently realised: this is detrimental to the state! A cleanup is underway. Do you think it is easy? Thousands of people are working there, our people who were brainwashed using someone else’s money. Here is an example for you. Therefore, it is necessary to approach all kinds of innovations very carefully. Of course, we should not be retrogressive and stick to the things that became antiquated. Yet, we must run in the right direction, always think about the consequences of our actions.”
