The embattled President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has met with his ally Vladimir Putin.

The Russian president congratulated Lukashenko “on the victory in the presidential elections”.

This comes less than 24 hours after an estimated 150,000 people took to the streets of the nation’s capital Minsk to demand Lukashenko’s resignation.

Lukashenko is seeking loans and political support from Russia.

Demonstrations against “Europe’s last dictator” have gripped Bealrus since a disputed presidential election handed him his sixth term in office with 80% of the vote.

Protesters say Lukashenko rigger the election in his favour, with opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya seeking refuge in Lithuania after the ballot.

Lukashneko has ruled Belarus since 1994, harshly suppressing the opposition and the media.
