Dozens of migrants reportedly heading to the Belarus-Poland border gathered in central Minsk on Wednesday.

At least two thousand people are already thought to be on the border in the hope of crossing into the EU via Belarus.

The migrant standoff comes as tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.

Germany and Poland strengthened joint border patrols on the frontier with Belarus on October 20 and put a barbed wire fence in place to prevent the illegal flow.

On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki blamed Russia for the situation on the border, claiming that Moscow was instigating the flow of migrants.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said the comments were “irresponsible and unacceptable”, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called for the West to take responsibility for the migrant crisis
