Belgium: EU leaders sound alarm on Ukraine border tensions upon arrival for Council meeting

Tensions building up at the Ukraine-Russia was high on the EU’s leaders agenda as they arrived in Brussels on Thursday for a sitting of the European Council.

The meeting will be focused on the EU’s COVID-19 response, the migrant crisis on Poland’s border with Belarus and topics concerning security and energy.

This is the first EU Council for Olaf Scholz in the role of the German Chancellor.

SOT, Gitanas Nauseda, President of Lithuania: “Reinforcement of Russian military forces along the Ukrainian border, and probably we face the most dangerous situation in the last 30 years. I am talking not only about Ukraine but I am talking about the Eastern flank of NATO, about the Baltic region, and I think we have to do everything [that] is in our hands in order to prevent the worst scenario, which unfortunately we cannot exclude.”

SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): ”About Belarus, we are going to talk about Ukraine as well. Yesterday we had the Eastern Summit, the Eastern Partnership, but we are going to deal specifically with these issues. Yesterday we learned of the arrest of one of the main opposition leaders in Belarus, and I conveyed Spain’s solidarity with Ukraine in defence of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty to all our colleagues in the Eastern Partnership, and also in Belarus to convey all our solidarity to society, to all opponents, to the media, because we see that the repression and persecution of them is continuing”.
