Belgium: EU proposing 'set of strong sanctions' on Russia - EC vice-pres Sefcovic

The European Union is “proposing a set of strong sanctions” against Russia, the vice-president of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic stated during a presser in Brussels on Tuesday following a General Affairs Council meeting.

“Russia has created the biggest threat and stability to the peace in Europe since the Second World War,” Sefcovic explained. “We are at a critical junction,” he added.

Late on Tuesday, the leaders of the European Union unanimously agreed on a list of measures against Russia due to its recognition of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent republics and the deployment of troops on the territory of that country.

All of that was done to simplify things for vaccinated people. In terms of security and defense, as you know, the goal is the adoption of the strategic compass on March 24 and 25 at that European Council. It is of course even more important for the European Union to assert itself as a strategic and autonomous player in the current context.”

SOT, Vera Jourova, Vice-President of the European Commission:“As the commission said many times the primacy of EU law is the only way to ensure that EU citizens are treated equally across the EU and the only way to uphold the single market, this is a way we launched an infringement procedure against Poland as regard the constitutional tribunal and its interpretation of the Polish constitution, several other motions contesting the constitutionality of the EU treaty provisions remain pending before the constitutional tribunal.”
