The upcoming sanctions against the Russian Federation agreed to by the EU Council of 27 member states will “hurt a lot,” the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said at a press conference in Paris on Tuesday.

“This package of sanctions that has been approved by unanimity by the member states will hurt Russia and it will hurt a lot,” Borrell said, later also that the 351 members of the Russian parliament who voted for the recognition of the two Ukrainian separatist territories would be included in the sanctions list.

Borrell further added that 27 individuals and entities who were “undermining or threatening Ukrainian territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence” would also be targeted.

The meeting between European Union leaders and officials was held after Russian president Vladimir Putin recognised Donetsk and Lugansk as two independent regions of Ukraine in violation of international law.
