Belgium: Relationship between Russia and NATO at "low point" – Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg gave a doorstep statement on Thursday in Brussels, as part of the NATO Ministers of Defence summit, during which he highlighted the challenges in the relationship between NATO and Russia.

On Monday, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Moscow would be suspending its mission to NATO.

“We still have avenues and channels for communications with Russia, but we regret the Russian decision to close the two NATO offices in Moscow and to also stop their activity at the NATO mission here at NATO,” commented Stoltenberg.

According to Stoltenberg, NATO’s approach to Russia in the light of the announcement “remains the same as before, meaning credible deterrence and defence, combined with efforts to have a meaningful dialogue with Russia.”

“I think we also have to understand that the relationship between NATO and Russia is now at a low point. It has not been more difficult since the end of the Cold War but we strongly believe that when things are difficult, when we are faced with challenges in our relationship as we are now, it is even more important that we talk,” explained Stoltenberg.

The NATO Ministers of Defence summit is taking place across two days, finishing on Friday, with topics set to be discussed including an “overarching plan for the defence of the Euro-Atlantic area”, Afghanistan and NATO’s Innovation Fund.

NATO leaders will also be meeting representatives from Sweden, Finland and the European Union in order to discuss the future of their partnership.
