NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg once again condemned what he described as Russia’s military build-up at its border with Ukraine at a press conference in Brussels on Friday in anticipation of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Riga next week.
Stoltenberg said, “this is the second time this year that Russia has amassed large and unusual concentrations of forces in the region. This includes heavy capabilities like tanks, artillery, armoured units, drones, and electronic warfare systems, as well as combat-ready troops. This military build-up is unprovoked and unexplained.”
Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations its forces are being built up at the border.
Stoltenberg also condemned China stating, “China is also rapidly expanding its conventional and nuclear arsenal providing no transparency about its capabilities. And showing little interest to engage in arms control.”
The secretary general also addressed the ongoing tensions in the Western Balkans saying, “NATO troops are working together with EU diplomats to ease tensions on the border, and implement the recent agreement between Belgrade and Pristina.”
This statements come after the NATO secretary general met with Polish President Andrzej Duda on Thursday where he previously condemned Russia and Belarus.
NATO foreign ministers are to meet November 30 - December 1 in Riga.
