Lake Poopo has become a desert due to the region’s hot and dry climate, as footage filmed on Friday shows.
The second-largest lake in Bolivia after Titicaca has suffered an accelerated process of desertification that many experts consider irreversible.
Cristina Mamani Choque, a local resident, explained how before “the fishermen used to go out with their boats with loads of fish and we traveled from here to sell to Oruro, La Paz,” but “now it has dried up and there is nothing left.”
The Poopo was an important natural resource for the locals, who fished in its waters and cultivated along its banks years ago. However, today there are only a few abandoned boats left in its completely dry riverbed.

SOT, Cristina Mamani Choque, local resident (Spanish): “Right now we are in the place of Chacacollo, that’s what this place is called, it was the fishermen’s departure point. Here the transport with trucks was organised, they arrived here, the fishermen were with their boats with loads of fish, and we traveled from here to Oruro, La Paz…to sell our fish, that’s how it was before. Now it has dried up and there is nothing left. This place was like a market, it had many people.”
SOT, Cristina Mamani Choque, local resident (Spanish): “It has dried up little by little, since 2013, 2014, 2015 the lake has already disappeared. It was coming back, but now there is no longer a drop of water in the lake, we are going to search in vain.”
