USA: "My soul is hurt" - locals describe tragic Bootleg wildfires in Southern Oregon

Residents who lived through the Bootleg fires in Southern Oregon shared their experiences on Wednesday in the aftermath of the recent fires that ravaged the region.

“We’re not going nowhere. We’re staying and we’re going to rebuild. This is our home. We don’t have no place else to go,” said local resident Pat who lost nearly everything on her property.

Jim, an avid gardener lost his entire food supply and garden on his property.

“Fires 200 feet (61 metres) in the air, swirling and blazing, and at the same time the wind was blowing really, really fast, so the gusts were maybe like 30 - 35 miles per hour (48-56 km/h),” recalled another local resident Sayyid.

Oregon’s Bootleg fire is the largest wildfire active in the US at the moment. Firefighters are struggling to battle the blaze which is being fueled by dry conditions and is currently at 50 percent containment according to local authorities.

SOT, Pam, Local resident: “We had deer walking through here at night and now look at it. It looks like hell.”

SOT, Pam, Local resident: “We’re not going nowhere. We’re staying and we’re going to rebuild. This is our home. We don’t have no place else to go.”

SOT, Jim, Local resident: “Our whole garden was lost. A lot. And there’s more people out there that lost more than we did though.”

SOT, Jim, Local resident: “We had a fifth-wheel trailer we had over here for a rental and four trucks, two running trucks and two parts trucks. Our renters lost their trucks.”

SOT, Pam, Local resident: “It may sound crazy, but my soul is hurt because of this.”

SOT, Sayyid, Local resident: “So there is fires 200 feet (61 metres) in the air, swirling and blazing, and at the same time the wind was blowing really, really fast, so the gusts were maybe 30-35 miles per hour (48-56 km/h).”

SOT, Sayyid, Local resident: “By the time we got back, we were pulling up and nothing was standing.”

SOT, Sayyid, Resident: “It was like a stab in the heart because everything I built, the memories we had, the clothes and the memorabilia, the pictures and the toys and everything was gone.”
