Firefighters and search and rescue forces attended a safety briefing about Oregon Bootleg Fire outside the Fire Command Centre in Chiloquin on Thursday, as evacuations continued in the areas affected by the wildfire.

“So, Bootleg Fire has been burning for well over two weeks. We are currently at 380,000 acres (150,000 hectares). So we are now the fourth largest fire ever in Oregon history. We are certainly the largest fire in the US as it stands right now,” said Angela Goleman, a Bootleg fire public information officer.

The severe drought Oregon is experiencing is making it extremely hard for the fire department to extinguish the wildfire.

“Things are spotting out, a half a mile, a mile ahead of us when the fire is pushing. So that’s an incredibly difficult fire to stop. And this is one of the reasons that this has grown as large as it has,” said Goleman.

Thousands of homes have been evacuated, especially in rural areas, while at least 160 buildings have been destroyed. No deaths have so far been reported.
