Supporters of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro held a protest in Sao Paulo on Sunday in favor of paper voting receipts to be printed in addition to electronic ballots for the 2022 Brazilian presidential elections. The supporters of the change say it would help avoid possible election fraud.
Gathering on Paulista avenue, protesters held Brazilian flags and signs in supported of auditable printed voting.
“We Brazilians are fighting for something that is fundamental, elementary so we can know for a fact who voted and what the outcome is,” explained Andre, a protester.
In recent weeks, President Jair Bolsonaro has been critical of the electoral system and the Brazilian democratic framework arguing that a potential defeat in 2022 would be proof of electoral fraud.
SOT, Clarissa, Protester (Portuguese): “I’m here on Paulista avenue to ask for safer elections, to demand printed vote that can be audited, because the way things are with elections they can’t be audited, and fraud can’t be proven even if it’s there. We need safe elections to preserve democracy, not for one or other party, not for left or right, it’s for democracy, for all, for Brazil.”
SOT, Leticia, Protester (Portuguese): “For democracy, for education, I’m here also for president Bolsonaro and I don’t care what people say. We are here to fight for a better country, a more honest country with order and no mess.”
SOT, Andre, Protester (Portuguese): “We Brazilians are fighting for something that is fundamental, elementary so we can know for a fact who voted and what the outcome is.”
