A fire which was reportedly started by an illegal balloon has consumed 65 percent of Juquery park bio reserves near Sao Paulo despite ongoing firefighting operations.
City officials in Franco da Rocha have stated that a small balloon lit by a candle had initially sparked the fire, which was further spread by strong winds and the recent intense summer heat.
Sao Paulo state officials have previously listed the balloons, which many Brazilians send up into the sky on special occasions, to be among the top three causes of forest fires every year.
