Crowds of demonstrators held a ‘March against hunger’ through the streets of Sao Paulo on Saturday, in protest of rising food and energy prices across the country.
Participants could be seen holding signs and banners decrying the cost of food, with several banging pots and bans.
“We are taking to the streets today to say that we can’t stand the increase in food prices and the hunger and misery that is plaguing our country, so being here is an act of resistance, and to tell the government that we will not be silenced!” said demonstrator Ediane Nascimento.
The rally was organised by social movements the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST) and the People Without Fear Front.
According to a study by the Getulio Vargas Foundation, as of April 2021, 13 percent of Brazil’s population lived below the poverty line.

SOT, Guilherme Boulos, Homeless Workers Movement leader (Portuguese): “It is a shame that the country that is one of the largest food exporters in the world has people in the bone line, has people running after the garbage truck to pick up scraps (of food), this is what we want to report here today!”
