Brazil: Petropolis" death toll rises to 117 after floods and mudslides, recovery works underway

Recovery work was underway after the death toll from floods and landslides that swept the mountain city of Petropolis rose to at least 117 on Thursday, whilst 116 more remain missing.

Petropolis experienced an unprecedented 25.8 cm (10.1 in) of rain within three hours on Tuesday, which triggered the mudslides and flash flooding.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was in Russia on when rains broke out Tuesday, witnessed the aftermath on Friday and likened it to a war zone.

SOT, Sandra, Resident (Portuguese): “Trying to go after things after the first scary moment. everybody was trying to help. Those who lost their houses are now in other people’s homes. Now people are trying to fulfill the needs of others, like and old woman who cant leave her home or a child with a physical disability, so we’re trying to tend to it. It’s just that there are people who can’t even leave their homes to go to the help spots.”

SOT, Suelem dos Santos, Resident (Portuguese): “This was certainly a political act, only for political purposes so that his name is recognised: ‘the President came to Petropolis’, but to be honest he did not even come where the problem was, he came just to have his name seen.”

SOT, Adriana, Resident (Portuguese): “This became a sea, you could not see the difference between the river and the street. Water reached a level where all people they could think was to save people, we closed the doors as soon as we could but the water was so strong that it broke all doors and came in.”
