Rio de Janeiro authorities on Wednesday undertook a large-scale law enforcement operation in several of the city’s favelas.

Around 1,200 heavily armed security force units patrolled the streets of several favelas to, according to the regional government, ‘regain’ control of the territories, which are dominated by drug traffickers and militias.

Images show the largest operation taking place in the favela of Jacarezinho, in the north of the city. Armed special agents can be seen advancing through the streets of the area, as well as police and armoured vehicles.
