Brazil: Sao Paulo cities cancel carnival due to COVID-19

Sao Luiz do Paraitinga, in the state of Sao Paulo, is among the 71 cities forced to cancel its highly anticipated carnival due to the coronavirus pandemic, as seen on Thursday.

It is the second year in a row that festivities have been cancelled due to fears surrounding the health risks of running such an event with dense crowds.

“Carnival is essential for the economy of our small city,” said Benito Campos, who runs a carnival mask shop. “For the city, carnival has vital relevance, but at this moment we realise it cant happen, and it makes sense.”

Brazil is among the countries most affected by the coronavirus, with over 600,000 deaths and 22 million confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.
