‘Brazil On Independence Day: Lula’s Lead Over Bolsonaro’

A sea of yellow shirts, Bolsonaro merchandise, and a giant inflatable, horse-riding President - this is the celebration of 200 years of Brazilian independence.

Tens of thousands of Bolsonaro supporters poured on to this beachfront in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday to celebrate their populist leader, who is battling to win a second term in October’s vote.

But Bolsonaro’s attempts to win over poor voters with his billions of dollars of welfare payments have so far fallen flat, and elsewhere in the city, others celebrated Brazil independence day with anti-government rallies.

The favourite to win after votes are cast 2nd October is the former centre-left president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who most polls give a comfortable lead over the rightwing radical.
