Buffalo herds and horses grazing near the hamlet known as Budakli in the Eastern district of Guroymak get to soak in a hot spring lake where temperatures drop to minus 20 degrees C (minus 4 F) in winter seen on Saturday.
Young shepherds take their buffalos and horses through the snow-covered landscape towards the steamy pond, mainly on weekends, where the animals bathe for several hours. The hot springs reach 40 degrees (104 F) and can help prevent skin diseases and increase milk yield.
“When they stay at home very long, they get dirty in the barn; their milk yields decrease. When they come here, they are cleaned, they relax. Here the weather is cool, they like it.”
The primary source of income of the residents of the Guroymak district is animal husbandry and keeping the animals healthy and happy is an important business.
Local tourists also enjoy bathing in the thermal waters, which can help alleviate rheumatic diseases and skin disorders.

SOT, Ugur Azbay, Shepherd (Turkish): “In the summer they are always here, in these regions, as they wander in these pastures, they can come and enter into the water here.”
SOT, Ugur Azbay, Shepherd (Turkish): “People in the region are engaged in animal husbandry and some of them are engaged in agriculture. But in general, the people keep buffalo and cows.”
SOT, Ugur Azbay, Shepherd (Turkish): “This time the herd is small, but generally there is usually no room here, cows barely fit here. It has never been empty here, it is always full. When many people bring their cows, it is filling up. Everyone has approximately 10-15 cows, it is filling up, that’s why. I don’t have knowledge but they have lice in their feathers cause they stay in barn in the winter, this water cleans up their lice.”
