Celebrations in Sheikh Jarrah after decision to suspend eviction of Palestinian family

There were celebrations in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem on Tuesday after the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court suspended the eviction of the Salem family, taking their appeal into consideration.
The scheduled eviction was a major source of tension in the East Jerusalem neighborhood in recent weeks as Palestinians protested leading to clashes with Israeli armed forces and police.
As part of the verdict, the Salem family must now pay 32,000 shekels (€8,750) to the court as collateral.
The family was set to be evicted from March 1.

SOT, Ibrahim Salem, Resident of Sheikh Jarrah (Arabic): “Greetings to all the people of Jerusalem and greetings to all the young people who have shown solidarity with us and helped us in our problem. We thank them greatly. God willing, we will continue until we remain stationed in Jerusalem and the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah until the barriers are removed from Sheikh Jarrah and our joy is complete by removing the Banfir tent.”

SOT, Ibrahim Salem, Resident of Sheikh Jarrah (Arabic): “The decision was suspended on conditions that we pay 32,000 shekels (€8,750 euros, $9,900) in the court’s fund, and confirm the suspension one hundred per cent.”

SOT, Ibrahim Salem, Resident of Sheikh Jarrah (Arabic): “We trust the presence and we trust the youth who remain here. We must remain here because our battle will not end yet. Our battle in Sheikh Jarrah is not over. This is an initial victory.”

SOT, Mohamed Baraka, Head of Arab Follow-up Committee (Arabic): “I came here to talk, that all our people are there with you, and on Friday we will be here, God willing and on Thursday a group will come to make arrangements. As Abu al-Hummus said, this tent will not be removed until the Israeli occupation is removed.”

SOT, Basil Abed, Activist from Jerusalem (Arabic): “Today we were in Sheikh Jarrah, and there was a decision to suspend but we will not trust the occupation and their decisions. They say today the evacuation was completed and all decisions are suspended and frozen but we do not trust them. The sit-in is open, we are present and they are using a method on the basis that before the month of Ramadan the situation is calm. They use this method but we are here, the morale is high and we will be present in Sheikh Jarrah until the last breath.”
