Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the North Atlantic alliance, which promised Moscow not to expand eastwards in the past, has failed to fulfill this promise and ‘cheated’ Russia, speaking during a press conference following talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday in Moscow.
“We have been promised not to push NATO’s infrastructure eastward even one inch. Everyone is well aware of that. Today we see where NATO is: Poland, Romania, the Baltic states. They said one thing and did another. As we say in our country - cheated, well, just deceived,” said Putin, explaining the logic of Russia’s actions in the current negotiations on the security guarantees.
Putin also discussed the theoretical ramifications of Ukraine joining NATO. “Let’s imagine that Ukraine is a NATO member, stuffed with weapons, with modern strike systems just like in Poland and Romania. And it starts military operations in Crimea, I am not even talking about Donbass. This is sovereign Russian territory. The question is closed for us in this sense. Let’s imagine that Ukraine is a NATO country. And it starts military operations. Do we have to go to war with NATO? Has anyone thought anything about that? Apparently not,” he said.
Earlier on 26 January, US Ambassador John Sullivan handed over to Moscow Washington’s written replies to the security assurance proposals. The US side preferred to keep the document confidential.
Negotiations on security guarantees between Russia and the US were held in Geneva from 9 to 10 January, and the NATO-Russia Council met in Brussels on 12 January to discuss, among other things, the non-expansion of the alliance to the east. The third meeting on security was held at the OSCE on 13 January.
