Chile: Conservative Kast celebrates after taking lead in first round of presidential elex

Republican Party presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast celebrated his success with his supporters in Santiago on Sunday after taking the lead in the first round of the Chilean presidential elections.

“The only presidential candidacy that will regain peace, the only presidential candidacy that is an alternative to face criminals and drug traffickers, and the only option that will put an end to terrorism, is the one we represent, there is no other option,” said Kast to his followers.

According to the official results published by the Electoral Service, with 99.56 percent of the polls scrutinised, Kast achieved first place with 27.91 percent of the votes, followed by the left-wing Gabriel Boric, who achieved 25.81 percent of the votes.

In third place is Franco Parisi, from the People’s Party, followed by Sebastian Sichel, member of Chile Podemos Mas, who had the support of the current president Sebastian Pinera.

The second round of the presidential elections in Chile will take place on December 19, after no candidate achieved enough votes to proclaim themselves as the winner in the first round.
