Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Santiago on Friday in the run up to the second anniversary of a milestone date in the ‘social outbreak’ protest movement, October 18.

Protesters also expressed discontent at Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, who has been named in the Pandora Papers leak, with a government investigation into the matter ongoing.

Police water cannons were deployed against protesters as a measure to disperse crowds.
The 2019-2021 Chilean protests, known as the ‘social outbreak,’ were a series of nationwide demonstrations against social inequality that were sparked by public service cost increases. Later they developed into a social movement demanding constitutional reform and changes in the economic system of the country.

Organisations for the rights of the detainees have reported that hundreds are currently in custody. Many of them have been detained for more than a year without charges as protesters continue their campaign for their release.

The Pandora Papers, which contain 11.9 million leaked documents, or a total of 2.9 terabytes of data and were published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) on Sunday, alleged that 35 current and former heads of state, as well as 400 other officials from almost 100 countries, have made use of tax havens.
