Head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov spoke to the media in Beijing on Thursday, the eve of the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony, regarding the mood of Russian athletes and the number of medals that the national team plans to bring home.

“This ‘benchmark’ as I called it - it is 30 medals, so I would like not to consider the lower threshold, because all those who went to the Beijing Winter Olympics today aimed to achieve the maximum result,” said Pozdnyakov.

Responding to a journalist’s question about the impact of COVID-19-related restrictive measures on the team’s mood, the ROC head said, “We have been living in this system for quite a long period of time.”

“The places where athletes live, train, compete, they are quite open and free for all athletes and professionals to visit, so there is no problem here. I do not think that any of the athletes on the eve of the opening ceremony will want to go to some cultural, spectacular events,” said Pozdnyakov.

Pozdnyakov also commented on the choice of standard-bearers of the ROC team at the Olympics opening - skater Olga Fatkulina and hockey player Vadim Shipachev.
