A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) described the 1000-day detention of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou as ‘political persecution, accusing Canada of acting as the “cat’s paw” of the US during a press conference in Beijing, on Thursday.
“It (Canada) unreasonably detained Meng Wanzhou for 1,000 days and Canada became an accomplice in the political persecution of Chinese citizens by the United States” at a briefing in Beijing on Thursday,” said MOFA spokesperson Wang Wenbin. “Canada’s practice of being a cat’s paw of the US will harm others and harm itself, and the negatives will outweigh the gains.”
Wanzhou is not permitted to leave Canada as she awaits the outcome of an extradition trial to the US, where she could face wire and bank fraud charges for allegedly violating US sanctions on Iran.
China’s MOFA are calling on the US and Canada to drop all charges and allow Wanzhou return to China.
“We solemnly urge the United States and Canada to face up to the just calls of the Chinese government and the general public, immediately correct their mistakes, lift the arbitrary detention of Meng Wanzhou, revoke his arrest warrant and extradition request, release Meng Wanzhou and allow her to return China safely,” said.

SOT Wang Wenbin, China MOFA spokesman (Mandarin): “As for the Meng Wanzhou incident you mentioned, this is a completely political incident. The essence is the political persecution of Chinese citizens which is planned by the United States and Canada is an accomplice. It is a deliberate suppression of Chinese companies. The United States and Canada have repeatedly used the excuses of the law to justify their persecution of Chinese citizens. However, the international community knows that the law spoken by the United States and Canada is a tool for the United States to exploit, suppress dissidents, and seek their benefit, without impartiality and legitimacy as they said.”
SOT Wang Wenbin, China MOFA spokesman (Mandarin): “The Canadian side ignored the political plot of the United States and the fact that Miss Meng Wanzhou did not violate any Canadian laws. It unreasonably detained Meng Wanzhou for 1,000 days and Canada became an accomplice in the political persecution of Chinese citizens by the United States. Does the Canadian side still have a sense of right and wrong? Does Canada still defend human rights as it committed to? Canada’s practice of being a cat’s paw of the US will harm others and harm itself, and the negatives will outweigh the gains.”
SOT Wang Wenbin, China MOFA spokesman (Mandarin): “The Chinese people are people who uphold justice and are not afraid of violence. China will never accept any form of political coercion or abuse of justice, and will never allow any Chinese citizen to become a victim of political persecution in other countries. We solemnly urge the United States and Canada to face up to the just calls of the Chinese government and the general public, immediately correct their mistakes, lift the arbitrary detention of Meng Wanzhou, revoke her arrest warrant and extradition request, release Meng Wanzhou and allow her to return China safely.”
SOT Wang Wenbin, China MOFA spokesman (Mandarin): “China has noticed the reaction of the ROK (Republic of Korea), and we have the same concerns. Japan made the wrong decision to discharge nuclear-contaminated water in spite of domestic and foreign doubts and opposition, but now it has made mistakes and continues to advance relevant policies and technical preparations. This shows that Japan has no sincerity in addressing the concerns of all parties. China urges Japan to seriously respond to the voices of the international community, neighboring countries and its own people, immediately revoke wrong decisions, fulfill its due international obligations, and not start to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea without authorization from all stakeholders and relevant international institutions after fully negotiating and reaching consensus.”
