China: European-style Christmas market draws crowds in Shanghai's Bund

A European-style Christmas market has been attracting crowds of visitors near The Bund Finance Center, in Shanghai, as seen on Friday.

Visitors wandered around more than 100 stalls that sell gifts, mulled wine and various treats, while children queued to get colorful balloons from Santa.

Uncommon in China, the market was a curiosity for unfamiliar visitors and a shot of nostalgia for those who had seen some elsewhere.

“I used to study in Germany so basically every year I would go to Christmas market. I feel wonderful and very happy being here,” said Liang Hanchen.

Wu Jiarui, another visitor, said “the food, buildings, little houses, the Christmas tree and everything, are all very similar (to the Christmas market I’ve been to in Europe).”
