Residents of Harbian, Heilongjiang Province, reacted after authorities offered a 10,000 CNY (1,390 EUR, 1,570 USD) reward for proof of a positive COVID-19 test result, as seen on Friday.
On Thursday, the city government implemented the scheme after two residents tested positive for the virus.

“I think this is a good thing because it will encourage people to do nucleic acid testing more regularly, to detect the spread of the epidemic earlier and prevent [COVID-19] from spreading further,” said local resident Xu Shuai.

Resident Wang Liang stated that the ‘reward’ should be referred to as ‘compensation’ for contracting COVID-19.

“You do not have to spend your own money to see a doctor,” said Wang, suggesting that the money could instead be used as ‘holiday allowance.’

According to the World Health Organisation, 119 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the country on Friday.

SOT, Xu Shuai, Local resident (Mandarin): “I think this is a good thing because it will encourage people to do nucleic acid testing more regularly, to detect the spread of the epidemic earlier and prevent [COVID-19] from spreading further. I think this is a very good thing.”

SOT, Liu Zhiyong, Local small business owner (Mandarin): “No one wants to get infected with COVID-19, even if there is a reward of 10,000 CNY (1,390 EUR, 1,570 USD), what is the use and why people would want it? I do not know if this disease can be completely cured without repercussions.”

SOT, Wang Liang, Local resident (Mandarin): “I think this should not be called a ‘reward’ but a compensation, and now it costs no money to treat this disease. It is not a bad thing. I think it has both advantages and disadvantages, depending on how you look at it and from what point of view you think about it. You do not have to spend your own money to see a doctor, so this 10,000 CNY (1,390 EUR, 1,570 USD) is not bad as a holiday allowance.”
