China: Hearing for Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva's doping case begins

The hearing for Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old figure skater who failed a doping test at the Beijing Winter 2022 Olympics has opened in Beijing on Sunday.

Valieva will testify by video link during the hearing, led by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), about her doping case.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Skating Union (International Skating Union), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) and the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) will all be present at the hearing.

After the hearing, CAS will tell the media when they plan to announce the final decision. According to Matthieu Reeb, Director General at CAS, it will likely be on Monday due to the lack of a media centre.

The IOC has applied to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to appeal against the Russian RUSADA’s decision to lift Valieva’s suspension. The International Testing Agency (ITA) stated that the athlete tested positive for trimetazidine during the Russian Figure Skating Championships on 25 December 2021.

According to ROC, Valieva’s doping sample was not related to the period of the Olympic Games.
