China: MOFA slams former PM of Japan over comments on Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin addressed recent comments on Taiwan made by former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

“Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ignored the basic norms of international relations and the principles of the four political documents between China and Japan. China is strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed to this, and has lodged solemn representations through diplomatic channels,” Wang stated.

Abe commented in a virtual forum on Wednesday that a Taiwan emergency is a Japanese emergency, and therefore an emergency for the Japan-US alliance.

He continued, “Japan has colonised Taiwan for the half century, has committed countless crimes, and bears serious historical responsibilities to the Chinese people. No one should underestimate the Chinese people’s determination and strong ability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

He also criticised the US’s recent invitation to Taiwan for the upcoming ‘Summit for Democracy‘ on December 9-10.

He stated, “this blatantly inciting division and inciting confrontation has severely damaged inter-state relations. The unity and cooperation of the United States endangers international peace and stability, and naturally meets strong opposition from the international community.”

“The so-called ‘democracy summit‘ will not make Washington a democratic highland, but will only clearly expose the fact that US is the democracy manipulator and saboteur,” Wang added.

The United States invited 110 participants to the summit excluding both Russia and China.
