China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian urged the United States to show transparency on the COVID-19 origin probe conducted by the World Health Organisation during a press conference in Beijing on Monday.
Lijian was speaking to reporters after more than half a million Chinese netizens signed a joint letter to the WHO, calling for the organisation to investigate the Fort Detrick biomedical centre in Frederick, Maryland.
“Over 90 percent of survey participants said the next step of investigation should go to the United States. I suggest you all take a look,” he commented, adding that Americans “should show transparency and answer all the questions and concerns.”
The Fort Detrick lab centre’s research operations which are under the supervision of the United States army were closed in 2019 following concerns over several security breaches before reopening in April 2020.
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Spokesperson for Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mandarin):
“By 15:00, more than 750 thousands have participated in the co-signing calling on the thorough investigation into Fort Derrick Lab to figure out the truth about the coronavirus. Now, as we’ve just mentioned, the number of co-signers is growing rapidly. I have also noticed that the Global Times has conducted an online survey on where should the origin trace of coronavirus. Over 90 percent of survey participants said the next step of investigation should go to the United States. I suggest you all take a look.”
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Spokesperson for Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mandarin):
“This is the spontaneous act from the media and netizens and the questions are still waiting for answers. Still, some people in US are stuck regarding the answers. We would like the US to answer a few questions. What is the relationship between Fort Detrick and EVALI and other respiratory disease of unknown cause? Why didn’t they invite WHO experts team to US Fort Detrick for coronavirus origin tracing? Why the WHO experts team can go to China but not go to the US? The US should show transparency and answer all the questions and concerns.”
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Spokesperson for Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mandarin):
“Recently, over 54 countries have sent letters to WHO’s director general on origin tracing matter. They called for the scientific tracing and oppose political manipulation. Origin tracing is the scientific matter and second round of tracing should be conducted on multiple locations by scientists in the world. Any of the act turning back science and truth, advocating tracing origin with intelligence department and threatening the scholars and experts, will inference and ruin the global anti-pandemic cooperation and evoke strong opposition from the international community but won’t prevail.”
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Spokesperson for Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mandarin):
“The will of the people cannot be violated. The US attempts to use political manipulation to put the blame on China, which is known to everybody. The US should respect the voice from the international community including China and should give a satisfactory response on the co-signing and the online survey.”
