Olympic superfan Zhang Wenquan welcomed the start of Beijing’s Winter Games by showing off his vast collection of souvenirs at his home in Beijing on Saturday. Thirty-five-year-old Zhang has a massive collection of Olympic souvenirs.
The Chinese superfan started collecting Olympic souvenirs as a high-school student during the Sydney Olympics in 2000. His collection which cost the superfan around 500,000 yuan ($78604 / 68,653 euro) includes Olympic torch replicas, giant cuddly mascots, commemorative stamps, coins and Olympic banners from Tokyo to London.
“I probably have a collection of more than 5000 pieces, including mascots, badges, flags and so on, which cost about 400,000 yuan ($62,883 / 54,922 euro) to 500,000 yuan ($78604 / 68,653 euro),” said the Olympic memorabilia enthusiast.
Zhang Wenquan small house is full of piles of boxes. His favourite collection is the Beijing Winter Olympic mascot “Bing Dwen Dwen”, a rotund panda wearing a shell made of ice.
“I think these Olympic souvenirs bring me the most happiness. Because I am very happy to see them, and many of them are special and limited edition. I have these Olympic souvenirs surrounding me every day, so I feel very happy, especially when I come home after a day at work,” commented Zhang.
The Beijing Winter Olympics kicked off on February 4 and the Games will last until February 20.
