China’s COVD-19 vaccination programme reached a milestone on Friday according to officials at a government press conference in Beijing.

According to Mi Feng, a spokesperson for China’s National Health Commission (NHC), over 777 million people completed a full vaccination cycle on August 12 and “over 1.83 billion doses of COVID vaccines have been administered.”

Health authorities are currently focused on vaccinating teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17, according to He Qinghua, an NHC official.

“Whether in terms of controlling the source of infection or cutting off the transmission route, in most countries, the COVID-19 epidemic has not been controlled,” explained Wang Qinghua, an Immunologist at the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

“In the future, we hope to establish herd immunity. Vaccination within children is also an indispensable part of the process of establishing herd immunity,” added Wang.

According to He, over a thousand cases of COVID-19 have been “reported in 18 provinces across the country.”

“Among the 48 cities where domestic infections have been confirmed, 36 cities have not reported new infections for more than 5 days. With the exception of Yangzhou, Wuhan, and Zhangjiajie, only sporadic cases have been reported in other cities,” said He.

As China continues to progress with its vaccination programme, over 60 million doses have already been administered to teenagers between the ages of 12 to 17, according to health officials.
