A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry argued Taiwan is ‘not qualified to join the UN,’ pushing back on nations friendly to Taipei expressing support for the island’s entry into the United Nations during a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

“All the Taiwan related affairs should be handled under the One China Principle, and the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. Taiwan as the province of China is not qualified to join the UN,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

“United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 represents the legal fact recognised by the world. It shall not be denied or be distorted by the Taiwan authorities or by anyone. Any form of Taiwan Independence will lead to nowhere.”

Tensions have been growing around the issue of Taiwan in recent weeks, with the United States acknowledging it has had troops deployed there for at least a year. In early October, some 150 Chinese aircraft from China’s People’s Liberation Army entered Taiwan’s air surveillance zone.
In September, several nations friendly to Taiwan, including Paraguay, Belize and Haiti have expressed support for its inclusion into the United Nations system.

China has long asserted its sovereignty over the self-governing island of Taiwan, retaliating against other countries establishing official ties with Taipei.

SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Mandarin): “In the UN system, especially the agencies and UN secretariat, with this institution, all the Taiwan related affairs should be handled under the One China Principle, and the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. Taiwan as the province of China is not qualified to join the UN.”

SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Mandarin): “Years of practice has completely demonstrated that the UN and its members all admitted that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is the indivisible part of China. They have fully admitted China’s exercises of sovereignty on Taiwan.”

SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Mandarin): “United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 represents the legal fact recognised by the world. It shall not be denied or be distorted by the Taiwan authorities or by anyone. Any form of Taiwan Independence will lead to nowhere. The hype of certain people in Taiwan of this issue is provocation of the One China Principle and also a grave violation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. It is typical of Taiwan independence remarks. We are firmly against such remarks and they will have no audience in the world.”

SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Mandarin): “We firmly believe, the Chinese government and the Chinese people, in the just cause of national sovereignty, territory integration and opposing division, operation, separation and realise national unification. It will continuously be supported and understood.”
