The ‘Cholitas,’ a group of Aimara women from an indigenous South American village, decided to climb Bolivia’s highest mountain to share a message against gender-based violence on Friday.
The ‘Cholitas’ dressed up with traditional wide skirts and prepared to climb the 6,500-metre-high ‘Doctor Sajama.’
Ana Lia Maguebo, better known as ‘Liita,’ is responsible for the ‘Mama Pacha’ project of the ‘Cholitas’ and will climb the snowy mountain with her two companions, Dora and Flora.
“I have already climbed up to high camps. I started as a cook about 30 years ago, but I have been climbing to the top for about six years; I have climbed this mountain, Dr Sajama, before, this is going to be my second time,” said 56-year-old Dora.
The three women, followed by a team of mountain guides, who support them in the technical and health aspects, will climb the highest peak of Bolivia to shout to the sky, ‘stop violence against women’.
The project, presented in the Bolivian capital, is supported by the United Nations World Food Programme and UN Women, and is part of the international organisation’s global UNITE movement to stop women’s and girls’ violence.
