Colombia: Displaced indigenous people camp in Bogota to protest housing subsidy withdrawal

Hundreds of displaced indigenous people from different ethnicities, including Embera and Nasa people, have been living in a makeshift camp in the National Park of Bogota to protest the subsidy withdrawal from the Colombian government that paid for their accommodation costs in the city, as seen on Thursday.

Indigenous people were seen cooking and resting near tents created using large plastic bags.
“We arrived here as a result of the armed conflict going on. In our territories, they continue to assassinate us, dispossess us of the territory; they continue to threaten us, rape our women, recruit our children. As a principle of the defence, of life, we have had to emigrate to the large cities,” stated Maria Belen Medina Quilcues, a Nasa indigenous.

According to local sources, at least 80 percent of those living in the makeshift camp in Bogota are victims of armed conflict who fled because of forced displacement or because armed groups took their territories.
