Colombian special security forces could be seen heavily armed around Cucuta airport, Tuesday after bomb blasts killed two policemen and a suspected attacker early in the morning.
Officers were seen searching for explosive material with metal detectors near the runaways.
The surrounding areas were cordoned off, including the home of a local woman that was affected by the explosions.
“We were sleeping, it was the scare, the impression that the windows burst, and we were behind the curtain, so the curtain stopped the glass, but some pieces of glass managed to fall on the bed, thank God it didn’t reach us in the face, ” the witness said.
According to the government, the first explosion took place while an attacker attempted to jump the gates of the airport, which caused the explosives they were carrying to explode.
The second incident took place while police forces were searching the airport for threats after the first explosion, with officers Reyes and Barreno accidentally activating an explosive device which resulted in their death.
Colombian President Ivan Duque said he would coordinate immediate action to find those responsible for the attack, after tweeting that he ‘repudiated the cowardly terrorist attack.’
